Pedalling for Every Heart
This August, the Stay Gold Cycles team is getting on our bikes for something bigger than the kilometres ahead.
We’re taking part in the Heart Foundation’s Cycle for Heart, challenging ourselves to ride throughout the month while raising $3,000 for cardiovascular research, prevention and recovery programs. Participants can aim for 116 km, 232 km or 580 km—or choose a distance that suits them—and every outdoor ride, commute, spin session and trip to the shops counts.
Why this cause is close to our hearts
For Stay Gold Cycles co-owner Erin, this fundraiser has a deeply personal and professional significance.
Erin has worked in forensic pathology since 2012. Throughout her career, she has seen the devastating effects cardiovascular disease can have, not simply as numbers in a report, but through lives lost unexpectedly and the families left behind.
Her connection to heart health also extends beyond her work. Erin’s brother is a cardiologist, and has family members that live with congenital heart defects. Through these experiences, she has seen many sides of cardiovascular disease: the importance of early diagnosis, specialist care and ongoing medical support, as well as the vital role played by research in improving treatment and giving people the opportunity to live longer, healthier lives.
Heart disease can affect people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of fitness. It can be visible and closely managed, or completely unexpected. That is why continued research, education, prevention and support matter so much.
Why we’re riding
We believe bicycles can be a powerful force for good.
They help us move our bodies, clear our minds, explore our neighbourhoods and connect with the people around us. Cycling can be serious or silly, fast or slow, a long weekend adventure or a quick roll to the pub. What matters is getting out there and keeping each other moving.
Cycle for Heart brings together so much of what Stay Gold Cycles is about: bikes, health, community and helping more people experience a long life filled with the people and things they love.
The challenge represents the 116 people who die from cardiovascular disease in Australia each day. Around 4.5 million Australians are living with cardiovascular disease, while someone is hospitalised following a heart attack approximately every nine minutes.
Those figures are enormous but every person represented by them has a family, a community and a story.
Where your donation goes
Money raised through Cycle for Heart supports the Heart Foundation’s work across cardiovascular research, prevention and recovery.
Even a modest donation can contribute to meaningful research. The Heart Foundation provides examples including approximately $40 supporting the isolation of blood cells for blood-clot research, $100 contributing to genetic testing for heart-disease research, or $200 helping purchase essential laboratory equipment for cardiovascular researchers.
Every donation, no matter the amount, helps us move closer to our $3,000 team goal.
Ride, donate or help us spread the word
There are a few ways you can support Team Stay Gold Cycles:
Make a donation through our Cycle for Heart fundraising page, share our fundraiser with your friends and family, or sign up and add some kilometres of your own. The challenge is open to all fitness levels, and distances can be completed outdoors, on a stationary bike or in whatever way works best for you.
We’ll be sharing our progress throughout August, so follow along, give us a wave when you see us riding and help us pedal towards our goal.
Together, we can turn kilometres into research, support and hope for every heart.
Support Team Stay Gold Cycles and help us raise $3,000 for the Heart Foundation.
