Jasmin’s Do it for Heart

By Jasmin Truong

In loving memory of my grandpa, Kheng Chor.

Celebrating birthdays in iso hasn’t been ideal for many. Birthday hugs and kisses and what seemed normal, feels such a distant time ago and so foreign now. Celebrations and wishes have now become virtual. My friends of the same age are probably equally feeling that 2020 has marred what’s meant to be this milestone year for us all.

What’s particularly hard, is missing the opportunity to celebrate it with family and friends in person. So many of us had plans to travel, tick off bucket list goals, or even throw a party to celebrate our 30th. I wished my 30th could have been celebrated in a different way too. I reflect on the family dinner I had planned months ago, to cook and have at my grandparents’ - a seafood boil, maybe my grandpa’s favourite dish I’ve cooked - XO seafood stir fry, and to finish, another of his favourites, a durian cake I would have baked.

I’m sure he would have enjoyed it, laughing away in his seat at the dinner table - and probably joining us for a swig of whiskey.

In dedication and celebration of my grandpa’s life, I’m choosing to pay tribute and homage to his sacrifices and legacy that he’s paved for me, my siblings, cousins and his future great grandchildren. I certainly wouldn’t be here today, the person I am, or the family I’m a part of without him. Everything I am and have is from the love I’ve received as his granddaughter. He welcomed my partner, Theo, into the family and loved him too. I miss him every day. Though this birthday is a sombre one, I know he’s smiling down on my family and is at peace. I feel it.

This year, in place of a party, presents, cards, or even a birthday wish via text message, please consider a donation to the Heart Foundation. Big or small, no donation is too little or not enough to go into research that could save lives from heart disease and conditions. Your gift of donation will mean the world not only for my grandpa and me, but the lives you’ll help save.

Please join me in commemorating my grandpa’s life.

Resting in love. Kheng Chor.

I’m celebrating by asking for Do it for Heart donations in lieu of receiving gifts.

I’m passionate about saving Australian Hearts and I need your help to create change. That’s why I’m fundraising for the Heart Foundation – and I hope you’ll support me in this.

Heart disease remains Australia’s biggest killer, claiming 48 lives every day. Your donation will help the Heart Foundation to transform Australia’s heart health by:

  • Funding life-changing heart research
  • Supporting health professionals working to prevent, diagnose and treat heart disease
  • Providing heart-healthy programs and resources for everyday Australians.

Please make a donation today, click the donate button. Every donation, big or small will help me get closer to my goal.

All donations over $2 are tax deductible and you’ll get a receipt by email as soon as you make your donation.

Thank you for your support.
