WE DID IT!!!!!A plan and a dream realised!! WOOHOO🚶♂️🚴🥂♥️🪅🎈🎈🎈
And a beautiful group gathered to prepare to welcome us 'home'.... fabulous!!
1414 kms walked
4 car rides****
2 buses
1 catamaran and countless ferries, so not sure of actual amount travelled, but the walking kms are locked in!!
**** Thanks to:
*Steve's lift to Bundeena as the National Park Ranger advised us to change our plans getting through Royal Park.
*Helen Cini's brother-in-law, Mick, who gave us a lift from Hawkes Bay to get past flooded and closed roads at Mungo Brush.
*Dom's lift to Port Macquarie to get us past some flooded areas and closed parks.
*Councillor Chris Kirkman's (from de Bortelli Wines and Port Macquarie) lift to Coffs Harbour to get us past more flooded areas once the road was open.
We thank you all for your generosity and conversations!
Our final week and, as always, so much has happened:
Weather gods were very discombobulated this week with a day of rain, a day of sun, a day of wind and cloud cover then more rain, then a day of sun....
More stunning long stretches of beaches, some small protected coves, headlands, fisherpeople and birds. I joined a lovely, newly-formed Heart Foundation walking group in Pottsville! We 'swam' in fun undertows, saw heaps of whales, especially at the popular viewing area on top of Hastings Point, dolphins and for Jo, a shark! We dreamed of living in many of the places we have visited and what our future plans/hopes/possibilities might be...
Our heartfelt thanks continue:
Most especially, to all of YOU who have generously donated, shared, wished us well, supported us physically or with calls, messages, texts, visits, suggestions, vibrated media, comments, Trivia Night organising and participation, and following along with us on our way north. Thanks for coming along with us! We have been blown away by your support and generosity of spirit.🙏🙏🙏🙏
My deep and sincere thanks go to Joey JoJo Joanna. Her continued strength, determination, courage, humour and commitment to riding are a constant source of inspiration. Her delightful and quirky ability to break into song at any moment of the day or night, or roll out a pertinent line from a movie, TV show or podcast has filled our time with laughter and joy! Love you long time, dear girl!😘
There is of course, a downside: I think the "What happens on the Trek, stays on the Trek" rule should apply. However my delightful, media-savvy girl-come-detective is always on the lookout for 'content' and apparently I provide loads of that - without even trying!!
**Note to self: find a way to delete the videos.... soon!!🙃🤫😁🙃
Lots to ponder and reflect and where best to do that, but Kirra beach. Please, oh please, give us bone-warming sun for at least a few days. 🙏☀️☀️☀️🙏 What's that you say? Check the BOM forecast? Sure..... oh goody, a mere 40mm of rain predicted for Monday. Plan B... stay in bed🫢😁😘
$17,100 raised thus far....
Thank you Umpires
Thank you Linesmen/women
Thank you Ball Girls/Boys
Beth's Weekly Update 8
Another week of highlights! The weather gods allowed us a few more days of sunshine, then the rain hit hard the last couple of days. We have been in whale country and the joy of spotting a spouting whale was surpassed the other day when I could actually see a whale breach on the horizon at Seven Mile Beach - if you zoom in, you'll see it too! Plus sightings from Byron in the rain today - with a mother and baby alongside. At Suffolk Park getting down to the beach was a challenge in many parts, as the steps and dunes are so eroded. Sadly, a huge number of trees have been lost in this top end of the coast, with several more looking like they will soon follow. So many beautiful beaches, tracks and trails to explore... in some ways, I don't want this trek to end. However, with 120kms or so to go, we will make our way north to Coolie and celebrate next Saturday!!
It's been a week with many opportunities to pause and be grateful for so much.
We have loved the random encounters with all those who have stopped for a chat along the way. Your stories, especially the ones related to your heart conditions, and our connection made this trek even more special and fulfilling, increasing our determination to raise more funds. Every interaction has held purpose and meaning, and the occasional surprise! We thank you. 🙏
Shout out to our accomodation places/people who offered support and/or a reduced fee:
Pleasant Way River Lodge, Nowra
Bulli Beach Tourist Park, Bulli
Southend Motel, Maroubra South
Ettalong Beach Tourist Resort, Ettalong
Reflections Forster Caravan Park Lakeside, Forster (who reduced our fee and all fees for all travellers who were 'stranded' here with no way to move during the floods. They also put on community fire gatherings and games days and nights!) Awesome team!
The Mid Pacific, Port Macquarie
Reflections, Evans Head
Ballina Beach Resort
Aloha Motel Byron Bay
You have all added to the enjoyment of our stay!
Special mention to the folk at Stoke Beach House (hostel), Manly and at the
Seaside Holiday Resort, Fingal Bay who let us stay free of charge. 😃😃As well as the folk at Nelson Bay Tourist Info folk who sourced us a luxury apartment free of charge in the centre of town when stranded with no ferries running!😃😃
THANKS to you all!👏👏👏👏
Then there was Stanwell Tops!🤗
Steve and his JUST CRUISIN' Motorcycle Tours business info@justcruisintours.com.au and his partner Shelley who runs the fabulous AirBnB: 'Stanwell Tops Tiny Home', as well as her Embroidery Plus business. They were a great team supporting us with laundry and lifts to chemist to attend Jo's injured hands and to the bike maintenance man and to Bundeena. TOP people!! ♥️♥️
One more week, one more Weekly Wrap to come, and more important thanks... Onwards and upwards we go for our final stretch
Beth's Weekly Update 7
It's official! No rain for over a week and beautiful blue skies and sun!! Woohoo!! May be somewhat freezing at night (where are my warm blanky-type clothes...? Back in Victoria 🙃) but loving our days!
More of the Clarence River and so many beautiful beaches this week - and time exploring them. The sand erosion from Cyclone Alfred is very visible, as are the effects on small towns still trying to recover from the 2022 floods, with several businesses closed down. The sugar industry is up and running and the sugar cane 'harvest time' is a hot topic of conversation with many locals.
This week sees the end of scary roads as mostly on coastal tracks or quiet country roads. Did have a close and scary encounter with a "Reactive dog!" 🐕 I had to defend myself on the beach walking from lovely Iluka to Woody Head, which was a glorious walk and one I would happily repeat, until this dog raced up madly barking, then snapping and baring its teeth! Whilst the walking poles may have triggered him perhaps, they definitely defended my legs that he was trying to grab. The owner who raced up after him, confirmed, "Yes love, he would have bitten you!" The couple were very apologetic and ensured he was kept on the lead for the rest of his walk, but I was at a loss as to why they would take their reactive dog out in public, off lead??
Other creatures I am now besotted by, are the birds. I am mesmerised by the beautiful pelicans who seem to be at almost every place we go! Watching them gracefully gliding along the water, or hunting for fish then throwing it down their gullet that can expand and contract in seconds, is quite extraordinary. As is their knowledge of where each fisherman cleans the catch of the day! Also loving the bright orange beaks of the pied oyster catcher, the ibis, the curlews and the masked lapwings - noisy buggers! Might have to become a twitcher in my old age. Just loving having time to sit and contemplate and enjoy our natural world. Spending several hours a day, outside every day, is such a joy and a treat.
Two weeks left to savour this experience...❤️🫢❤️

Beth's Weekly Update 6
After a great walk on country roads from Grafton to Ulmarra, I felt very nervous the next day as I prepared to walk Big River Way from Ulmarra to Brushgrove (8.5km) before the 24km from Brushgrove to Maclean. The heart was racing in seconds of being on Big River Way.I spent a lot of time (once I was off it!) contemplating the amount of fear I feel on scary roads. Even when there is a wide shoulder, the vulnerability felt, standing at the side of road as huge semi trailers race by (or trucks, buses, caravans or cars), the force of the wind generated is enormous. I would at times have to brace myself against the pressure of the wind gusts. Fine if there is space, but when the shoulder is around 30 or 60cm, and you're up against a railing, or long grass, boggy grass that could be housing snakes, or the drop away from the shoulder is steep... terror definitely ensues.
My admiration for Jo continues to grow as she views scary roads as a challenge to be met on her bike. I view them as something to survive or avoid. (No need to comment on how brave or not brave we are, this is just a musing/reflection....)
What I have also noticed, is how quickly the body can relax, once in a different environment - I am so enjoying the beautiful country roads with local traffic, where drivers wave or signal they see you and slow down or leave room to pass. As a city/ beach girl, I have not expected to find such joy, solace and contentment walking the roads amongst old farm houses, paddocks of cows, so many cows, and of course the odd sheep, dogs and ducks . The wide expanse, the blue skies, the bird song, the waft of cows and horses, and of late, fields full of sugar cane (a sign we are getting closer to the sunshine state, yay!) are all such a calming immersion. For my therapy mates - a lived experience of the Polyvagal Theory in practice!
Give me beach walks, rocky headlands, coastal tracks/trails, rainforest reserves and country roads anytime! Be gone scary roads.
Favourite places this week are Woolgoolga (best body surf ever); Ulmarra (best quaint village so far with a pub we both want to return to, plus the Secondhand Book Shop, definitely the Book Shop); Yamba (awesome harbour town that offers so much... and prawns!!) and Angourie (great day today walking along beaches with Jo, lots of rock hopping, watching mesmerised as a pod of dolphins swam in close and played - you can play Spotto in a couple of the photos) and watching Jo swim in a beautiful blue rockpool). Each place offering different delights!
And the stand out people this week (apart from all family and friends who ring or message and check in with us - Thank You!!) are the construction workers at the two bridges crossing the Micalo Channel just before Yamba, who clocked Jo riding towards the very challenging bridge crossing with no shoulder and little room and stopped cars for her. When they saw the old chook walk towards it some time later, the team leader drove his truck to stop right in front of me. I was confused - where was I supposed to go? Further on to the middle of the road? No!! He wanted me to get in the front cab of the truck and he happily escorted me across the challenging construction site! "I can't let you walk that - it's just not safe. I can't believe you've walked such a bugger of a road. We're building a walk/cycle track because this road is such a shocker!" Thank you, kind Sir.
And Raymond who let me know he'd seen me walking Yamba Road from Maclean and was curious about what I was doing..., then donated. So kind.
We continue to aim high - $20,000 is the new goal so please feel free to share with anyone and everyone!

Beth's Weekly Update 5
So good this week to be back walking north again! Whilst we were waiting out the floods, I kept walking locally and having a good explore of places in the rain, but the satisfaction of walking 25+kms AND moving further north on the map, is very real. Happy days!Port Macquarie held some great coastal walks that were fun to explore. Sadly for all, there was still flood damage to attend to, so there was many a Plan B, C and D...
Walking the Solitary Islands Coastal Walk has been a highlight this week, with its rugged coastline, wild surf and varied tracks over many headlands. These tracks range from thin sandy overgrown tracks, to boardwalks, natural trails, boggy wet trails(many) and stone paths. Navigating creeks running into the sea this week saw me channelling my Robinson Crusoe spirit and gathering stones in some instances, or logs of wood/ branches in others, to make a path across the water.... and I was also swamped by a rogue wave at one point! Walking along beaches often meant 'playing chicken' with the waves to dodge the fallen trees from the altered dune line. I would try to time a wave so I had the chance to run around the tree and be back on higher sand before the next wave and next tree... lots of fun! As was trying to get up to a track that was now a chest high sand dune!
Another highlight was sunrise on Muttonbird Island, Coffs Harbour. Walking out early to the Island with Jo, then watching the colours of the sky and the many folk walking, running or gazing and enjoying the early hours of this special place was awesome.
I continue to love having folk stop for a random chat and this week three stand outs were: the lady who was married at the beautiful Harry's Lookout, Port Macquarie, with its stunning outlook, who shared that she chose the right place to be married - just chose the wrong man! Also, Richard on the beach at Coffs Harbour with his generous donation and time chatting, and Sam and Peter up on Mullaway Headland today, who gave me some local knowledge and a great tip - direction to the best beach shack style Cafe ever, the Mullaway General Store - and a delicious falafel wrap! Yummy!
Looking forward to next week's adventures...
Oh, and weather gods - we wouldn't mind some consistent sun for a while! The rain jacket wants a rest.
Beth's Weekly Update 4
Yet again.... what a week it has been... for unpredictable reasons.
Plans kept changing with flooding in Mungo Brush National Park and several ferry dilemmas. Walking from Elizabeth Beach to Forster however was mostly magical! Huge rain was predicted, so I set off early and was greeted by a glorious morning on Elizabeth Beach. I then walked through, up and over the beautiful Booti Booti Headland on the Booti Hill walking track. So crisp and fresh at that time, although recent rains had it very boggy and slippery in several sections - thank goodness for walking poles! It had not started raining when I stepped on to Seven Mile Beach, and then.... it did!! It poured, once again - torrential rain. Visibility was challenging at times, however it was still a beautiful walk on this huge expanse of coast. Later, up on to a somewhat scary road with very wet, boggy, marshy verges until I met the cycle path and made my way into Forster.
We did not realise we would be here in Forster all week, but then heavy rain became a severe weather incident, that then became a natural disaster. Our thoughts constantly turned to the farmers, small business owners and workers whose homes and livelihoods are forever changed by the events of this week. What a massive effort by all emergency and support services.
The awesome force of nature was evident in the rushing torrent of the Wallis Lake and Coolongolook River, the crashing waves of the ocean, the huge volume of sea foam and in the accumulated natural and man-made fallout pushed out to sea, then on to the beach. I was fortunate to be able to join the volunteer clean-up crew on one part of Nine Mile Beach near Tuncurry on Friday morning.
Several local folk shared their stories in the rain, about how they recalled the floods of 2021, or others, and how they had never seen the sea like this - definitely a record-breaking weather event.
Our plans continue to be fluid and we will make our way north shortly, jumping up the coast to a safe spot, when roads are open...
The real highlight for us this week was family getting through the challenging road situation and having some playtime together - and the odd bevvy!🥂
Onwards and upwards we go! 🚶🚴
Beth's Weekly Update 3
Well, what an amazing third week it has been! Top of the list is that on Friday, the youngest member of our family donated and tipped us over the $14,000 goal!! Congratulations Team Phil - we nailed it!! Thanks so much to all our supporters and donors. The next challenge is to see how much further we can go! Can we crack $20,000.......maybe?It has been another week of great humans. So many people have stopped to chat about the walk, or the bike, or the distance, or the weather, or offer local advice, or company on the walk... And let's not forget generous Mick who came to our rescue, driving us to Elizabeth Beach. Thanks Mick! Thanks Helen!
The weather: sorry to all the Victorians waiting for rain - NSW has so much, too much! 🌧🌨⛈️We have had to change several plans as walk/cycle tracks closed, camp grounds closed, lakes flooding, roads and tracks too boggy or slippery to walk/ride... All the new plans have mostly led to unexpected new adventures, or in one case, awesome top notch accommodation!!
This past week we have walked and cycled from Lake Munmorah, Swansea, Newcastle, Williamtown, Anna Bay, Fingal Bay, Nelson Bay, Hawks Nest...
Highlights this week are many! Everyday there is a small or large happening to treasure. Some standouts this week would have to be:
1. The Fernleigh Track - this beautiful old railway track is now a stunning cycle walk path through Awakabal land and Glenrock State for 22kms between Swansea and Newcastle, complete with original sidings in places. Even the constant rain could not downplay this beautiful area, and with the bonus of it being flat!
2. Walking along Birubi Beach/Stockton Beach at Anna Bay, a huge expanse of beach with the largest moving coastal sand dunes in the Southern Hemisphere. I felt like I was in the desert and the ocean at the same time. Lots of fisherman out and about and happy to chat
3. Tomaree Coastal Track where I felt I was on an Orienteering course! Gobsmacking views at every turn, including stunning Samurai Beach and Fingal Bay. Many rocks to climb and explore and marvel.
More places to return to, at leisure 🥰
Beth's Weekly Update 2
Cronulla to Lake MunmorahSo many adventures over the past 8 days, including catching up with dear friend Deb Skinner as we walked Newport to Palm Beach, then later in week, Tim arrived for a couple of days! So good!🥂
Weather wise we have had sun, torrential rain, showers and some wind, but nothing to deter us. A river crossing, an active rifle range and a third snake sighting. What did go pear-shaped was the build up of sand at Ettalong and Wagstaffe so the ferries could not get in. Plans changed somewhat. So many beautiful places we have adventured through and many we'd love to revisit another time, including South Maroubra, Manly, Newport, Ettalong (with a surprise landing in Patonga!) Avoca, The Entrance, Budgewoi...
Highlights: Our faith in human nature is definitely high as we continue to meet folk willing to offer support, encouragement, have a chat, give advice on water crossing and/or donations! Oh, and councils who make walking/cycling paths to avoid being on very scary roads. More beautiful coastline to explore.
Rest day and a massage, here we come!
Beth's Weekly Update

Highlights: kind, generous and supportive folk; The Kiama Coastal Walk, Sandy Beach trail, magnificent blowhole and waves crashing against rocks with HUGE sprays, a Thai massage, Puckeys Nature Reserve, the Sea Cliff Bridge
Oh, and rubbing Numbat Cream into knees and feet each night (thanks Michael Carey!)

In memory of Philip, whose birth and death dates are 14, and as this year marks the fourteenth anniversary of his death, we are aiming to raise $14,000 by walking 1400 kilometres. Phil loved teaching maths, so we are celebrating his love of numbers in this way. Beth will be walking the 1400 kilometres whilst Jo rides the 1400 kilometres AND carries all our clothes and supplies in panniers.

Awesome effort raising money for a very worthy cause. Mr Humphries was my Grade 5 teacher. I then met his sister, Jacinta in Year 7. It took us awhile to put the connection together. The most embarrassing memory was when Jac & I were watching Puberty Blues on VHS and Phil came home and busted us. I have fond memories of Phil.
