I’ve taken on a challenge to Do it for Heart!
In August, I lost my amazing Dad. Whilst this has absolutely broken us as a family and nothing can prepare you for this kind of sudden loss- we were very lucky to have gained an extra 17 years with Dad after he had a quadruple bypass in 2008.
Heart disease remains Australia’s biggest killer, claiming 48 lives every day. This time it did claim Dad's life, however he was given a second chance all those years ago. He was given the opportunity to be around to see my brother and I grow up and this easily could have looked very different, without the success of his heart surgery.
I am choosing to run a marathon in 2026 to honour Dad and to raise money for the Heart Foundation. Dad was always one of my biggest supporters in my running. When the most I had ever ran was a half-marathon distance, Dad said to me 'go for the marathon!'. I was so lucky to have Dad watch me run over the finish line of the Ballarat Marathon in April this year. I am so glad he saw me do that. Now I am going to do it again- for him. When I crossed the finish line, I said I would never do another full marathon as it was gruelling, but here I am! I know Dad would not accept anything less.
Rather than signing up for an official marathon event where the registration fees are minimum $130, I will instead be donating that to the Heart Foundation and creating my own marathon event on the streets of the Bellarine Peninsula/Geelong.
I will also be warmly inviting anyone who wants to run alongside me for all of it, some of it or just be a support person with hydration, gels and liquids along the way. Date to be confirmed (once I sort out my training program)
I’m passionate about saving Australian Hearts and I need your help to create change.
